Lesson Syllabus
- Sight reading of notes: Classical songs like Beethoven and pop songs like Billie Eilish and Frozen. Learning songs you like will help you be more passionate to learn.
- Expression: Play according to the mood of the piece (angry/happy). You will be able to use music to express how you feel.
- ABRSM Practical and Theory Exam Preparation (Grades 1 to 8): This forms a solid background for all kinds of music next time, leading to a much deeper understanding of how music really works.
- Pop/Jazz music accompaniment: Read chord and lead sheets so you can accompany any singer on the piano without sight reading notes.
- Rhythm: Play fun games like clapping with the rhythm. You are taught to feel the beat, which will be handy later if you join a choir or band.
- Music history: Cool facts about the composer and the way of life during that era. You can learn how to relate to the composer and express better on the piano.
- Aural: Play by ear techniques so you can play back your favourite songs that you listen to.
- Theory: The backbone of music and how music is composed. You will have a much deeper understanding of the different components which make up a song.
- Music games: We use music flash cards to play fun board games and interactive software like Simply Piano.
- Improvisation and composition: You can compose a simple piece with different moods/themes (eg: snowstorm). This moulds your creativity by tailoring music to showcase who you are.
- Ensemble and duet playing: The teacher and the student will have a different part to play. This helps you to be able to keep in time and play in an ensemble next time, plus it’s always more fun to play music with other people!
About Shu Hui
I’m a full time piano teacher. For me, playing the piano gives me joy, but teaching people how to play music is priceless. I love sharing the joy of music with my students, by helping them to not only pass their exams, but also learn composition, and playing songs in pop and jazz styles.
Some of my students have achieved Distinctions in their ABRSM theory and practical exams. Most of them can improvise their own music using chord progressions and have fun expressing themselves on the piano.
I have 10 years of piano teaching experience, and have successfully guided students from aged 3 to 65. I have achieved a London College of Music Associate Teaching Diploma, 2 years Piano Major at Lasalle College Of The Arts and ABRSM Grade 8 Piano and Theory. All these have helped me to adapt to every student and teaching them in a way that is best suited for them.
I have performed piano/guitar and drums in bands in various locations around Singapore like Musical Showcase at Esplanade Library, Ballet piano accompaniment at Lasalle College of the Arts and guitar at Yello Jello Clarke Quay.
“Because of my teacher’s guidance, I achieved distinction for my grade 4 piano exam. I improved my technical skills over time and she exposed me to different genres of piano music, broadening my repertoire.”
– Damon (aged 23)
“I couldn’t have achieved Distinction for my Grade 5 Theory without the help of my teacher!”
-Yi Jia (aged 11)
“My class is focused on pop piano music like “A Million Dreams” which is what I enjoy. I can compose with a backing rhythm or with different tones (strings), and learn fast!”
–Dia (aged 10)
